Hi Kim! I have Addy's undies...and I love them! The hoop skirt is pretty stiff. She cannot sit in it...at least I've never been able to get mine too!

The petticoat isn't bright at all...it's dull...I love it...you can either pull it down a bit to show out the bottom of her dresses, or you can pull it up. I think it's a great set!

When I was in 4th grade I was in a musical, and I had to wear a hoop...I'll never forget it...it was so hard to sit in...or move for that matter!

Kim, the petticoat is definitely what you might call a berry color. It does barely stick out beneath some of her dresses if she is also wearing the hoop. I found this to be a bit of a problem, and you really have to pull the petticoat up as high as you can to keep it from showing. A good seamstress might be able to take a quarter inch off the bottom if necessary.

Also, her dresses seem a little short for a hoop. I don't really know if it looks right or wrong (I'm no Southern girl!) but when she's wearing the hoop plus pantalettes, the hoop brings the skirt hemline up so high that the pantalettes *really* show a lot. I know they show a little bit normally, but this looks funny to me.

I don't think I've ever tried to sit her down with her hoop.

My Addy and her friend Sarah sit in their hoops but--how to put this delicately?--that's because their sitting on their tushies with the hoop flattened out toward the front and the back. This doesn't seem to do it any harm. I seem to remember seeing Vivien Leigh assume a similar posture in GWTW, and that's good enough for me. On the downside, some of Addy's clothes from AG do seem skimpy when worn with the hoop, which hikes the hem up well above where it should be. But then I think a lot of AG's clothes for the historical dolls are skimped on fabric.

I also have the undies and love them even sometimes have her wearing just that since it looks like another outfit. (Not for that ear though) I was worried buying it that it would stick out or look wierd but it looks fine and doesn't show with her pink Meet dress (I don't know about others.)I was a little admint about using the hoop becuase I thought it would look awkward but it doesn't it looks nice although my doll is standing I would say it might be more proper if you don't use the hoop for sitting displaying.

i have the set and really like it. the only problem i've had with the hoop is that it doesn't fit under some of her dresses. for instance the meet dress. the dress really fits tight around the hoop and i think it looks a little funny. this also happens with her new kite flying dress. they seem to have more of an a line skirt than a poofy full skirt.

other than that i think it makes her outfits look really nice. i haven't had a problem with addy sitting as long as there are no arms on the chair she is sitting on. although i do the same thing as auri where addy is sitting bare bottomed on the seat with her dress behind her.

Question

I was thinking of purchasing Addy's Undies and had a few questions for anyone who may happen to have them. The crinoline (or for those of us in the South "hoop skirt") seems very stiff. Is it as stiff as the pictures show on the website? If it is, how do you get Addy to sit down in it? Also, on the website, her petticoat looks like a vibrant red or cherry color. Is it really this bright? If so, does it cause a problem with her other outfits? Can you see it underneath her dresses? I just didn't want her to not be able to sit or clash with her other dresses

Thanks!

While browsing around looking for more info on Tasha, see other posts, I can across this hoopskirt chair. Just thought it might answer the sitting questions. Unfortunately it appears to be OOAK and sold. But, worth looking at. It was made to fit 15 to 17 inch dolls.

The hoop itself is anything BUT accurate. There was no such thing as a one-bone hoop, and someone in Addy's social position wouldn't have worn one anyway. Working women and girls very very rarely, if ever, wore a hoop. For one thing they couldn't afford it, and for another it just wasn't practical. Addy also wouldn't have had a red tafetta petticoat. That was a status symbol. She definately would have had a flannel one to wear in the winter, and it might have been red, but probably not.

Addy would have never worn the hoop under her Meet dress. Hoops are not the type of thing one would want to wear when traversing the Underground Railroad, lol. Plus the Meet dress is a typical young girl's workdress. That equals no hoop.

The terms "hoop skirt" and "crinoline" are NOT interchangeable. They are two entirely different things. Crinolines are extra stiff petticoats. Hoop skirts are entirely different and give the dress a completely different shape. If Addy wanted to look semi-fashionable, she would have worn crinolines. But again, her family couldn't afford it, even after Poppa and Sam got jobs.

This is another reason why I think Addy's collection should have been taken back to the drawing board before going into production. We Civil War re-enactors are incredibly outspoken and can be vicious when the time period is mis-represented in the way it is in Addy's books and collection. As wonderful a doll as she, and as wonderful a story as she has to tell, they did a sorry job putting her accessories and clothes together.

When I was in 4th grade I was in a musical, and I had to wear a hoop...I'll never forget it...it was so hard to sit in...or move for that matter!
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Then somebody forgot to show you how to sit in it, lol. It's very very easy, you just have to watch what kind of chair you try to sit down in while wearing it. I personally love wearing my hoop, especially when dancing. (need to put a real waistband in it though, lol)

The petticoat is Madder Red, also known as Turkey Red. They did a good job of reproducing this period color. BTW Addy'sCinnamon Pink Meet dress and the Cape Island Dress would have been dyed with madder. Pinks where typically achieved by fabric manufactures by reusing a madder dye bath previously used to dyea batch of fabric or thread red. Also Cinnamon Pink is the name of the specific color you would typically get from reusing a madder bath.

Also, the correct way to sit while wearing hoops is to perch on the edge of your chair with the rear of the hoops gathered either behind your bottom, or behind your knees, depending upom the size of the hoops and the depth and height if the chair.

Thanks everyone It is so hard to tell what something is like just from the pictures on the website. You've all been a big help!
